Contractors and Freelancers

Making it easy to start up in business

Why would anyone leave the relative security of PAYE employment to enter the uncertain world of freelancing?

There can certainly be financial advantages. But in our experience, most people go into freelancing for lifestyle reasons. It gives you the opportunity to run your own business without having to worry about office politics or being part of a large organisation.

Clearly there are also downsides. These include company administration, government paperwork and of course the uncertainty of breaks between assignments or periods of sickness.

Our contractor team is here to make the whole process simple and painless.  They can advise you on whether it would be better to work via an umbrella company or to set up your own business and how you might be affected by the IR35 rules.

We make it easy for you to start up in business. Our typical steps for clients are to:

  • Arrange an initial informal meeting to run through your plans and prepare some first year profit and tax calculations
  • Form your company for you and get you fully registered for PAYE, VAT etc
  • Provide you with a copy of our bookkeeping package – or we can handle the bookkeeping and VAT work for you
  • Take care of all aspects of company accounting and tax work, as well as dealing with your personal tax return

Our specialist accountants are always available on the phone or equally happy to arrange a face-to-face meeting at any time. For no additional fee, we also run a regular Sunday morning surgery.

We can also advise on all aspects of personal financial planning, including how to cover yourself for extended periods of sickness.

Many first timers find the prospect of working for themselves quite daunting. Our role is to strip away the mystique and make it as easy as possible for you to run your own business and enjoy doing it.  Once you become part of the UK’s flexible workforce, there’s a good chance you won’t want to go back to full time employment.
