Doug Sinclair

Partner, Tax Investigations

Trusted specialist in tax investigations and disclosures for individuals, companies, trusts and partnerships

Doug is a conscientious, dynamic, and down-to-earth adviser and head of tax investigations for the firm.  He sees himself as a buffer – shielding his clients from any unnecessary worry during what is already a stressful period for them.

A great result for a tax investigation can vary depending on the case, but Doug has a consistent approach – doing the right thing for the client, while dealing assertively with HMRC.

An expert tax practitioner with three decades of experience

Doug joined BKL in April 2012 and was promoted to partner in April 2015. He uses his decades of diverse experience to help clients with a range of tax solutions.

He started his tax career in 1987 as an administrative assistant at the Inland Revenue (as HMRC was then known).  Learning on the job, Doug progressed to Inspector of Taxes in 2001 before taking his expertise to the other side, to work in practice.

Before joining BKL, Doug worked with a Big Four Firm and a national mid-tier firm, advising clients who were either the subject of a tax investigation or who wished to make a voluntary disclosure.

Throughout his career, Doug has combined his practical skills with his technical understanding of tax to make a real impact on his clients.

Tax writer, speaker and panellist

Doug is a member of ICAEW’s Tax Investigations Practitioners Group. He also sits on the Tax Committee for HOSPA (Hospitality Finance, Revenue and IT Professionals); he enjoys contributing his professional insight for the benefit of this association.

Doug has written for several impressive publications. These include The Times, Tax Journal, Accountancy Age Insight, Accountancy Live and our own tax bulletins.

He has also presented to various regional member groups of the ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) and CIMA (the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants). He finds collaborating with peers to promote shared learning and high quality service very rewarding.

A rugby fan and fine wine enthusiast

Doug played representative rugby for Kent U16s, Anglo Scots U19s & U21s. When not supporting Scotland or reminiscing about his ‘former glory’ rugby days, Doug can be found stocking up his wine cellar with bottles from the Wine Society.
